A Summer Afternoon is one of my earlier paintings. This image combines two of my favourite and recurrent themes: people and nature. The little girl sits in the yielding lush grass of the meadow. She is totally pre-occupied with the task she has been assigned by her mother: To gather a bouquet of yellow lilies to decorate the dining room in preparation for the family evening meal.
The background colours merge into each other as if viewed through a soft-focus camera lens. The effect is to conjure a dreamy, timeless image of an unforgettable summer’s day.
