The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert between India and Pakistan. It is about 7,505 square kilometers in size and is reputed to be one of the largest salt deserts in the world.
These grassland and deserts are home to forms of wildlife that have adapted to the often harsh conditions of this vast area. At night, an unexplained strange dancing light phenomena known locally as Chir Batti (ghost lights) occurs in the Rann and adjoining Banni grasslands,
The unique handicrafts of Kutch are world famous. Many young girls make their living by selling different types of mirror or bead inlay embroidered cloths.

It was during a trip on a sleeper train through India that I first set eyes on this image. It was a small 3-inch by 3-inch advertisement inside a local newspaper left behind by another traveler. I put the page safely in my backpack and carried it with me through the rest of our adventures in India. On our return home I converted the tiny image to a majestic 1 meter by 1 meter oil painting, and this is the result.
