The blue Mayura originates from the Indian subcontinent, and is one of the sacred birds of Hindu mythology (Mayura is the Sanskrit word for peacock). Krishna is generally depicted with peacock feathers adorning his head.
These large colorful pheasants are known for their iridescent tails (typically blue and green). The tail feathers (or coverts) spread out in a distinctive train that comprises more than 60 percent of the bird’s total body length and boasts colorful eye markings of blue, gold, red, and other hues.

Peacocks – often a symbol of pride and vanity – were believed to deliberately consume poisonous substances in order to become immune to them, as well as to make the colors of their resplendent plumage all the more vibrant. This idea appears to have merit, since so many poisonous flora and fauna are vibrantly colorful due to aposematism.
Spy the Eye of the Beholder – This painting is made from a photograph taken in Malaysia. Look carefully into the peacock’s eye and you’ll see a reflection of the photographer.
