Silverback - Endangered Species - Elena Bondar | Oil-on-Canvas
Silverback

Sharing approximately 98% of their DNA with humans, gorillas are our closest relatives after chimpanzees and bonobos.

However, for decades gorillas have been the victims of uncontrolled hunting, disease, habitat loss and the ravages of human conflict. Their numbers fell to around 200,000, and they are now considered an endangered species.

Gorillas are considered highly intelligent. A few individuals in captivity have been taught to use sign language. Like the other great apes, gorillas can laugh, grieve, have “rich emotional lives”, develop strong family bonds, make and use tools, and think about the past and the future.
