Originating in Northern Europe in the 8th and 9th centuries, the Vikings were dedicated to Odin – the pagan god of war. Trapped by the confines of their barren ice-bound Northlands, they exploited their skill as shipbuilders to raid neighboring countries in a reign of terror unequaled in violence and brutality.
When the Vikings set forth to rob and plunder England, they never sailed out of sight of land. They confined their attacks to swift, overnight raids on unsuspecting villages and monasteries. It was no accident that the English Book of Prayer contained the sentence:
“A furore Normannorum libera nos, Domine”
(“From the fury of the Northmen, O Lord deliver us”).
