This painting depicts an enigmatic tableau from the first televised episode of Outlander. In this scene Frank observes what appears to be Jamie’s ghost staring up from the square into a hotel bedroom where Claire is obliviously combing her hair.
Outlander is an historical drama television series based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon. It tells the story of Claire Randall, a married former World War II nurse who in 1945 finds herself transported back to Scotland in 1743. There she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings.

Behind the Canvas
The location of this scene is supposed to be the center of Inverness in Scotland. However, the real location was in the village of Falkland, just an hour’s drive north of Edinburgh. You can actually stay at the guesthouse featured in the show— the Covenanter Hotel —which looks out onto the Bruce Fountain where Jamie’s ghost is first seen.
Although this black-and-white image appears much like a charcoal drawing, it is in fact an oil painting on wood – something of a challenge in itself! The subject matter is a late, wet and raining evening scene which lends itself better to the absence of color and ties in well with the sombre granite-stone buildings of the town.
